My first introduction to Unity was December 31, 2000. I’d been divorced that year. I hadn’t attended a church beyond infrequent visits to a Catholic church as a child and spot visits to non-denominational churches with well-meaning friends. The messages that these churches promoted did not resonate with me. When a friend invited me to go to UCOH with her that night, I felt a certain amount of dread. I’d already concluded that church membership was not for me. I left that very first service elated, knowing that I’d found my church home!
I’d been reading books by Marianne Williamson, including a “Return to Love”. Her ideas engaged me but I wanted firsthand experience with this thing called “A Course in Miracles”. In that very first service, Rev Ron spoke words that I felt deep in my heart were true. And, UCOH had a weekly ACIM meeting! There started a twice-weekly (at least) adventure at Unity Church of the Hills that continues today.
With its many ways to engage, I quickly became part of the community. I volunteered as a painter and to work in the yard when the congregation moved from the strip center to this beautiful campus under the arches, served as a teacher in the youth ministry, and as an usher. I learned about and then practiced on the Reiki team, as a chaplain for six years, and gave Oneness blessings. I participated in the choir. Over the years, the church has served as both a supportive family and as a school. “Family” because the members understood and accepted me in a way that it is sometimes difficult for born families to do, even when those families are caring and helpful. It has been a school (BTW, I’ve always loved school) because choosing to follow and practice those 5 Unity principles have vastly improved my life.
Just because I did not attend church before Unity doesn’t mean that I didn’t believe in God. I remember that one night, shortly after my divorce, I’d prayed to God to show me what true love is, and how to do it. It wasn’t long after that that UCOH and the Unity teachings came into my life. I thank God for Unity Church of the Hills everyday and want to support anyone who can benefit from the Unity concepts as well.
Outside of UCOH, I like to help people with information. I’ve been a newspaper reporter, managing editor of a technical magazine, and finally a technical write (this last, 27 years with the same company and still counting). I have two grown, capable children, who also were a gift from God.
