The 2015 Hilde Girls & Drumsistas Benefit Concert, “Seeding Our Wild,” will be on Saturday, April 18, 7:00 p.m., at Unity Church of the Hills, 9905 Anderson Mill Rd., Austin, TX 78750. This year, the concert will benefit the Westcave Outdoor Discovery Center, a local non-profit organization whose mission is to connect children and their families with nature through their “Children in Nature Collaborative.”
Hilde Girls, under the direction of founder, Susan Lincoln, is a unique community of women who sing from their hearts, grow and learn together, and share through service. The songs they sing are from all over the world, but their roots are from the teachings and music of 12th century abbess and mystic, Hildegard of Bingen. Each year, the women come together at their Annual Benefit Concert to share the songs of Hildegard and others, and to raise funds for local non-profits.
In the second half of the concert the beat picks up with the Drumsistas, a group of women drummers creating exciting African music on Djembes, Djunduns, Krins, and Balafons. Their performance – themed “Rhythm…The Soul of Life” – includes dancers, singers, and even a guest-saxophonist. Under the direction of Sherry Gingras, their performance will fill the sanctuary with hand-clapping, heart-pounding, foot-stomping joy and passion. It’s not to be missed!
The Westcave Outdoor Discovery Center began in 1976 as the nonprofit Westcave Preserve Corporation. It was established to clean up and restore this spectacular Hill Country grotto. Since that time, they have grown in mission and vision to encompass a state-of-the-art Environmental Learning Center and environmental education curriculum that supports state mandated learning objectives (TEKS) – hosting nearly 8,000 school children in 2012. In 2008, Westcave expanded its physical footprint to include the 45-acre “rim around the canyon,” bringing Westcave to its current size of 75 acres. In 2012, the Westcave Board of Directors unanimously agreed to incorporate the Children in Nature Collaborative of Austin as a core program of Westcave after an extensive strategic business planning process. Another outcome of this process was the need for Westcave to better express the organization it has become. In March of 2013 – on the 10th anniversary of the Warren Skaaren Environmental Learning Center – Westcave announced its new name, Westcave Outdoor Discovery Center. The Board of Directors and staff believe this name better represents Westcave’s range of programs including its magnificent Preserve, the new rim property that will be open for daily, self-guided hiking, its partnership role with El Ranchito Discovery Camp and Conservation Corp, and leadership of the Children in Nature Collaborative of Austin.
