Gentle Yoga

Mondays at 10:00 a.m. with Donna Pennell

The Monday yoga class is truly a gentle yoga class — no one will be standing on their head here. What is stressed over and over again is that everyone moves at their own pace, and does what they can do. There is no competition. Many people that are in the class have some limitation or another, so the instructor works with everyone to find what works for them. She also incorporates balance, eye exercises and the Tibetan Five Rites of Rejuvenation into every class.

As our longest running yoga class at UCOH, the group has really bonded — it’s a very social, family-oriented group and they often go out for lunch afterwards.

Donna Pennell was a step aerobics instructor in Los Angeles for 14 years and also taught yoga and Pilates before moving to Austin.

Laughter Yoga

Fridays at 7:00 p.m. with James Hazlerig

Laughter Yoga supports the belief that laughter can be a catalyst for positive transformation in one’s life. When we laugh, our brains release endorphins, our immune system gets boosted, our blood pressure drops, we breathe easier, our bodies feel less pain, and we get great cardiovascular exercise. There is no requirement of a good mood to participate in Laughter Yoga. In fact, one of the best times to laugh is when you are not happy. If we choose to practice laughing and playing regularly, we will find ourselves able to use the tools of light heartedness in many different areas of our lives. We like to say, “If you can laugh at it, you can live with it.” James Hazlerig is a trained Laughter Yoga Leader in Dr. Matan Kataria’s tradition, and the author of The Little Book of Laughnosis: Using the Hypnotic Power of Unconditional Laughter to Change Lives. He has led laughter sessions in drug and alcohol recovery centers and business networking groups.
